Earl, JJ and I decided to have a little dual sport fun. They ride together all the time; either in the dirt or on pavement.

It was the second time I'd ridden in the dirt in 30 years and I'd forgotten... most of it.

JJ has an XR650R with a brake light and license plate (Oregon is pretty forgiving) and Earl's DRZ400 is more legal than that, but not by too much. My KLR650 is mostly stock.

We started with 5 miles of paved road, then we were on a gravel forest road for 10 or so.

The gate was open at the fire lookout tower (no longer used) so we went up to the top. There was couple spending their 50th anniversary in the lookout.

When we left, we rode down to pavement about 10 miles away.

Parts of the gravel road turned into rock strewn single track. Earl suggested we trade bikes during the serious offroad sections. Good plan, because I dropped his bike, rather than mine.

All these roads are open all year, as long as you have plates on your bike.
